Wiimote rip-off?

Some of you may prefer the Nintendo Wii over the Sony PlayStation 3, solely because of the motion sensing device of the Wii. Sony has realized that and has decided to make a Wiimote of their own. According to news4gamers, they have already submitted the patent for such a device to the US Patent & Trademark Office.

This new device is very much similar to the Wiimote allowing players to target a certain point in 3D, using a sender-portion and a receiver-portion system. The sender portion is adapted to be manipulated by a user to specify a target point within a target area.

The sender portion projects a light beam including a pattern on to the target area. A receiver portion includes one or more sensor units located in or near the target area. Some of the sensor units receive a portion of the light beam, regardless of the location of the target point within the target area. A processing unit in the receiver portion analyzes the portion of the light beam receiver by one or more sensors units to determine an attribute of the target point. The attribute can be the location or relative motion of the target point. The receiver portion may be integrated with a display device.

I didn't want to get you bored with all this technical mumbo-jumbo, but this comes straight from the official patent application. It may sound confusing to you, but I must tell you that this system is very much similar to the Wii. Is it safe to say that this will be a Nintendo Wiimote rip-off?
