Michael Pachter is confident in the PS4, not so much in Project Morpheus

Michael Pachter, reputed games industry analyst, has offered a bit of insight into the current state of the PlayStation division, saying that it will bring in quite a lot of money for Sony despite the fact that the recently revealed Project Morpheus VR headset might not end up selling so well.

Sony's PS4 came out back in November and generated a huge amount of sales, managing to move over 6 million units at the beginning of March worldwide.

This momentum doesn't appear to be stopping, and this means great news for Sony as a whole because the Japanese company has been suffering greatly in terms of financial security in recent years.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has admitted to DualShockers that he doesn't know the situation of Sony's other division but confirmed that the PlayStation business will continue its great period started with the PS4 launch.

"I don’t know a lot about Sony’s other businesses so I couldn’t tell you how their TV division is doing or their movie division, I think that PlayStation is going to be a wild success, and I think the PlayStation division is going to be very profitable," he said.

One key area where the analyst isn't impressed, however, is virtual reality.

Sony presented the Project Morpheus prototype VR headset earlier this month at GDC 2014, and Pachter has already confirmed that it's a bad idea for the company to invest in such a product.

The analyst has now gone in-depth about the headset's potential sales and factored in the main rival, the Oculus Rift.

"I think the Oculus guys are going to be very happy with a million sales. If they get a million sales, they’re going to get a ton of money. A million sales is a huge success for Oculus Rift. It’s just a hiccup for Sony," Pachter said.

"I think people believe that Sony validated the concept by offering something of their own. The Oculus Rift guys, I don’t think they’re looking to sell ten million units. I think that if they sell a million they’ll create some more content, and then the next iteration sells two, the next iteration sells four… I think they have a very patient, long-term plan. A million of this for Sony… they’re better off spending that money on marketing for PS4."

As of yet, however, there are no exact details about the future launch of Project Morpheus, so expect to hear more in the near future, during upcoming trade shows like E3 2014.
