Creating a level in the fighting game is quite a challenge

Sony has posted a brand new video with its upcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale fighting game, this time focusing on the stages in which the title’s various characters will duke it out.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale includes a variety of impressive characters both from different Sony franchises, like God of War, Uncharted, or even LittleBigPlanet, but also from third-party properties, like Devil May Cry or BioShock.

Besides many characters, Battle Royale also has a variety of stages based on the games that the characters come from, so it’s been quite a hard job to recreate all of them in the new fighting game.

“We have a huge team of designers, artists, and programmers working on the characters, but we have a team that’s at least equally large working on the levels,” Game Director Omar Kendall told PlayStation.Blog. “It’s a huge undertaking in a game like this, because the levels have such a loud voice.”

Stages are designed so that all characters can perform well in them, no matter the actual style of the players, according to Kendall.

“We start by sitting around a table, a bunch of designers and artists, trying to figure out an interesting combat space to fight in. Some characters excel against enemies that are in front of them, others directly above and below them,” he explained, “so we create playspaces that leverage those advantages and disadvantages.”

In order to make sure that no level is the same, SuperBot basically starts from scratch when making a new stage.

“Technically, the process can be extremely complicated based on the ideas we’re introducing,” Kendall admitted. “So many of the levels in the game are essentially one-offs. We’ll create a lot of technology to construct a specific type of encounter, and then toss it and build a totally different experience for the next level.”

In order to emphasize the work that’s been done to create these levels, a special video has been posted below, showing off the work and dedication of its staff.
