A formal launch date will be announced soon enough

Sony knows the launch date of its PlayStation 4, and this was a major reason for the company's surprise reveal of the next-generation console in February, way ahead of regular industry conferences like E3 2013.

Sony impressed quite a few fans at the beginning of the year by revealing its PlayStation 4 next-gen device to the world.

While the actual console wasn't presented, seeing as how its design isn't ready to be shared with the world, the company did pin a Holiday 2013 release date to the PlayStation 4.

According to Sony Worldwide Studios Vice President Michael Denny, who talked with Edge, Sony knows the exact launch date but won't share it with fans just yet.

This surprising statement came in response to a question regarding Sony's desire to overtake Microsoft in announcing its next-gen console.

As of yet, Microsoft hasn't even publicly admitted that it's working on the Xbox 720 (aka Durango).
