Tetsu Sumii, the main designer who has worked on the overall image of the PlayStation 4, says that he wanted the next gen console to be one of the coolest and the smartest products that Sony has created for any market.

He tells the PlayStation Blog that, “I think the PlayStation brand image needs to be changed a little bit, as it’s a new console, and we have to show what we’re pointing towards for the future.”

This is why the team broke from the PS3, which looked like a home console, in order to create a sleeker look that would signal the new brand identity.

Smii believes that gaming products sometimes look a little exaggerated and has chosen to focus on simplicity for the PlayStation 4, to imply the wide variety of tasks the platform can perform.

The device will be launched on November 15 in North American and two weeks later in Europe.
