Sony has revealed some of the features that will be introduced in the upcoming PlayStation 4 software update 2.00, set to deliver a ton of exciting stuff to the home console's users.

The preview of the upcoming update is meant to get people excited and to put concerns at rest, as it seems that Sony is finally going to add some much-requested features to the PlayStation 4. The company has been getting a lot of flak for its recent updates, which consisted mainly of fixes, without really bringing in too much new stuff.

Now it seems that the Japanese corporation is dedicated to equaling the efforts of its main competitor in the new-gen console arena, Microsoft, which has been steadily adding new features to the Xbox One, month after month.

A lot of big features are coming

The stars of the system software 2.00 update, codenamed Masamune, are Share Play, YouTube support and Themes, but the patch will deliver a lot more than that.

PS 4 owners have been asking for ways to get in touch with their friends easier, to find more friends to play games with, and to be able to personalize their consoles, complete with the option to change the background of the home screen from light blue to either gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink or gray.

The update will introduce a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while playing, the option to change the look of the PS4 dashboard, as well as ways to better sort and filter the contents of your PS4 library.

The Content Area and Library section has been redesigned in order to make content more easily accessible for users, showing a list of the players' most used apps and games, and getting improved sort and search filters that will enable gamers to organize their content by type, name, install date or last time of use.

In addition to this, the monthly free PlayStation Plus games offered by Sony to its users will now have an Add to Library button, in the PlayStation Store, that will allow gamers to add a specific game to their PS4 library without having to actually download it to their hard drive.

Enhancements to broadcasting and media

PlayStation 4 owners will now be able to play their own background music while playing a game, with the addition of the new USB Music Player. Sticking a USB drive into your device will enable you to play MP3, MP4, M4A and 3GP files.

The update will also introduce a number of improvements to the PlayStation 4's live broadcasting functions, with users being able to select a Featured channel, including official broadcast from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on the user's friend list, as well as any game channel that the player has followed.

The Live From PlayStation app has also been enhanced with filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well support for archived broadcasts.

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets will also receive an update to version 2.0, around the same time the 2.0 firmware update drops for the PlayStation 4, which is at some undefined point in the near future.
