The controller of the new PlayStation 4 home console is one of the focuses of Sony’s presentation at the Games Developers Conference, with the company keen to explain how the new piece of hardware will enhance player satisfaction.

Sony says that the Start and Select buttons have now been labeled Options and a new button labeled Share has been introduced to make it easier to get in touch with friends and other players, according to Destructoid.

The controller also houses a speaker, a jack for a headset and an extension port that Sony has not yet detailed.

In a surprising move, the design team has chosen to make all the PlayStation 4 controller buttons digital because apparently, the analog equivalents were hardly ever used on the PS3.

The included analog touchpad has a resolution of 1920 x 900, although Sony has not explained exactly how it will be used in video games.

The controller colors for the PS4 are now equivalent to player numbers: 1 for Blue, 2 for Red, 3 for Green and 4 for Pink.

Gamers will also be happy to learn that the new home console will be able to charge its controllers while it is off, making it easier for gamers to play as soon as they boot it up.

Sony also explains that the light bar added to the controller will be used to simulate game elements like health bars or the flash of a firing weapon.

The PlayStation 4 will also have a dedicated camera that will have a special connector, designed to allow players to record video and taunt enemies, although gamers can also devise new uses for it.

Sony has not yet revealed the exact design of its new home console and the price tag it will carry on launch.

The PlayStation 4 is expected to arrive before the Christmas shopping season.
