Sony is definitely a busy company these days, as the recession pushed it to resort to some pretty heavy layoffs and prepare for tough times. But that hasn't stopped the engineers at the Japanese company from working on new updates for the two important game consoles made by Sony, as both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable have received new firmware.

First of all, the PlayStation 3 has received some pretty interesting new features, and the 2.60 firmware will now make all of the gamers who have been using the console as a multimedia machine very happy. This is because the new Photo Gallery feature will now allow you to store and organize your photos in a much better way, according to different things, like the facial expressions or the ages of the people found in those photos. Also, the creation of slideshows is much easier now, as the new tool allows you to manage your photos with great ease.

The other two new additions brought by this update include the fact that the PS3 now uses DivX 3.11, a video codec which now allows you to play the most recent videos found on the Internet, and a new feature that the PlayStation Store will receive, and which will let you browse the content available for download without having to register – as a guest. This isn't so glorious as the press release from Sony makes it, since creating an account for the PS Store is a very easy operation that can be done in a few minutes.

The PlayStation Portable on the other hand, hasn't received a lot of updates, as the 5.03 version only addresses some performance issues encountered by users during some operations made with the handheld console. All of these new pieces of firmware are now available for download via the PSN and can be installed using the System Update found in the XMB menu.

In conclusion, it seems that new things are certainly on their way to the PS3 and PSP and Sony fans can just hope that the engineers will continue to bring other interesting things to these two consoles.
