But only in Japan

The PlayStaton 3 is rebounding on Sony’s home market and manages to sell more than the Microsoft made Xbox 360. This might be a sign that, as the economic crisis deepens, customers are trying to get the most valuable console, and the PS3, with its integrated Blu-ray, offers just that.

The best selling gaming device of the previous week was, as in the last month or so, the Nintendo DSi, the new and improved handheld from Nintendo. Its numbers went up by some 6,500 to reach around 114,000 consoles sold in just one week. There are still DS Lite models on sale in Japan but the fresh, camera sporting, DSi accounted for most of the units sold.

The PlayStation Portable from Sony registered a drop in sales even as videogames for the platform sold better than usual. The device managed to sell a little over 55,000 units in one week, which is 6,000 less than the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii is the best sold home console, moving almost 50,000 units in one week. But the big surprise was the fact that the PlayStation 3 pretty much doubled its sales numbers, reaching almost 35,000 gaming devices sold in one week. This is mainly due to Konami’s releasing Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 in Japan, which is known there as World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 sold just 11,423 units and the PlayStation 2 is last in the hardware charts with sales of 5,628 units.

Professor Layton, an adventure puzzle game from Level 5 for the Nintendo DS, was the best sold videogame in Japan, with 347,000 copies sold in one week. The above mentioned World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009 is in the second spot, with 168,000 in sales. Machi e Ikouyo: Doubutsu no Mori for the Nintendo Wii is in the third spot with 109,000 copies sold in one week.
