Sony confirmed at the beginning of this year's Tokyo Games Show brand new sales figures for its PlayStation 3 and PSP platforms, ahead of the release of the all-new PlayStation Vita handheld console.

TGS 2011 is a big show for Sony, as the Japanese company is bringing quite a lot of games for its current consoles, the PS3 and PSP, but is also showcasing the upcoming PlayStation Vita, which just saw the confirmation of plenty new games, from titles remastered in HD, like Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid Collection, to adaptations of existing PS3 games like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Sony didn't miss the chance to show off its sales figures, however, with the company revealing that it's nearing a 52 million unit installed base for the PlayStation 3, which sold, since its launch back in 2006, around 51.8 million devices all around the world.

The company also confirmed that, since last year's Tokyo Games Show, 49% of consoles sold since then were PlayStation 3 units, while 46% of actual video games sold were made for the Sony home console.

The company's PlayStation Portable is also doing pretty well, managing to reach an impressive 71.4 million units sold worldwide, despite many people already knowing that a new and improved PlayStation Vita handheld is scheduled to appear soon enough.

Since last year, 43% of portable console sales were PSP ones, while 46 percent of portable software sold was for the PSP.

While sales will no doubt slow down with the release of the Vita, on December 17, in Japan, and early next year in Europe or North America, Sony is still confident in the PSP, especially since the lower-priced PSP E-1000 will be released soon enough in Europe.

Considering Sony also got weighed down by the PlayStation Network hacking scandal earlier this year, it's good to see that sales are still growing for its products.
