The PlayStation 3 benefited from appearing one year after the Xbox 360, at least according to some game developers, who believe the Sony console can still support more impressive graphics than the Microsoft device.

Current generation consoles are showing their age in front of platforms like the PC, but at least when it comes to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, some developers believe the Sony console has the edge in terms of graphics and hardware power in front of the platform made by Microsoft.

Speaking with Industy Gamers, several developers have expressed their views on current HD consoles, with Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi highlighting that the one year advantage over the Xbox 360 meant the PS3 could incorporate slightly more powerful hardware.

"PS3 came out a year later than the X360. Because of its later arrival, I would say that the PS3 has a slight advantage in performance," he said.

His views were echoed by Julien Merceron, the worldwide technical director of Square Enix, who believes that while the Xbox 360 had a slight edge at first, because developers were used to it, the PS3 is mounting a major comeback and will soon overtake it.

"Some consumers could have gotten the feeling in 2006/2007 that – graphically – Xbox 360 games were more advanced, but today it is quite different in fact," he stated.

"Personally, I’d say that – on PS3 – I believe there are some major improvements that can still be done, taking advantage of parallelisation and using more of the CPU for graphics tasks. At the end of current home console life cycle, it is very possible consumers might get the feeling PS3 is slightly ahead of Xbox 360 in terms of graphics, but it will only happen if developers dedicate time to really push things on PS3!"

While multiplatform console games have looked pretty much the same on the two devices, PlayStation 3 exclusives like Uncharted have definitely topped Xbox 360 ones like Gears of War in recent times.

What do you think about the two current consoles, does the PS3 or the Xbox 360 have the edge?

The PS3 has the massive advantange controller wise. I have a PS3, a 360, and a Wii, and the PS controller is better than the rest by far. The 360's controller is too awkward and big. I'm a chick so my hands are smaller. I quit buying and playing 360 games months ago and am replacing them with PS3 versions when I can find them.

"To each his own" really, but I have the opposite impression. I used to be playstation exclusive, but all that changed when I bought my first Xbox. True, the graphic on playstation are more capable, but by how much? Unless the graphic are like night and day, I wouldn't waste my time. The user interface is much more enjoyable on Xbox (that includes the controller). For fighting games, the PS3 controller has a slight edge, but for 3D games like MW3 or FPS for that matter, the Xbox controller is more ergonomic. By that I mean, my hands feel more at rest w/ Xbox. PS3 in the other hand, makes me twist my wrists inward making it a bit more awkward. If it wasn't more PS3 bluray capability, I would be Xbox exclusive.
