Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia has announced that the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system will receive a price drop in Japan.

The Charcoal Black super slim model, featuring a 500 GB hard drive, will go from 28.5k yen / $278 / €208 to 26k yen / $254 / €190, without tax, and will also receive a new model number, CECH-4300C.

The existing Charcoal Black 500 GB and 250 GB editions, models CECH-4200C and CECH-4200B, as well as the Classic White CECH-4200BLW model will be discontinued.

The price drop will take effect on August 28 in Japan, according to the official announcement, at which point the other editions will be rendered obsolete.

For the time being, there is no word on whether a similar price drop is planned for either North America or Europe.

The PlayStation 3 was launched in Japan on November 11, 2006, and since then it managed to sell over 80 million units all across the world.

Sony's current top-dog, the PlayStation 4, is also doing quite well, with the company reporting that its hardware sales have surpassed the 10 million units mark.

Sony's console's main competitor, the Xbox One gaming console from Microsoft, is not doing as well, with the last known official figures, dating since April 2014, placing the number of shipped devices at over 5 million, in the 13 countries that the console is available in.
