No exclusive release timing

A weird rumor fell on my ears a few days back, but it seemed so out of this world that I decided not to write about it. A German source was reporting that David Reeves, the much quoted boss of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, had said that Mirror's Edge, developed by DICE for Electronic Arts, was going to be released on the PlayStation 3 before it would be available for the PC and for the Xbox 360.

The rumor seemed weird because release exclusives like this one are very rare in today's videogame industry and because it would signal that Electronic Arts is no longer platform neutral and even has a sort of preference for the PlayStation 3.

It seems that it was all a big misunderstanding and what Reeves said was that the game would get some special DLC that was exclusive to the Sony-made gaming console.

In a statement made to Eurogamer, Electronic Arts confirmed that the "PlayStation has an exclusive marketing agreement with EA regarding the title." This probably means that, a while after the game hits the shelves, some content, which might be anything from a few new levels to some new game mode, will only be available via download through the Sony-run PlayStation Store.

Such exclusive downloadable content might also exist for the Xbox 360 and it might just be that Microsoft has failed to talk about it until now. It could certainly be a boost for the PS3 if it managed to persuade more buyers to go for the PlayStation 3 version of the game, as both Microsoft and Sony tend to brag about the adoption numbers when a game is launched on both their hardware platforms.

Mirror's Edge is set in a dystopian future where free running is the only way of delivering private information. The release date has not been announced yet.
