The old PlayStation 2 console will cease shipping in Japan, effectively marking the beginning of the end for the classic device.

While the PlayStation 3 came out in 2007 and is now quite popular, its ancestor, the PlayStation 2, which was released in 2000, is still selling well in a variety of territories.

Now, it seems that Sony has started the beginning of the end for the old PS2, as Kotaku reports that the company will no longer ship new consoles to Japan, meaning that once the stock of current consoles is depleted, the PS2 will be completely gone.

No explanation or reasoning was given and it's expected for the move to reach other continents and territories in the future.

Besides getting rid of the past, Sony is currently working on the next PlayStation console, in the form of the oft-rumored PlayStation 4.
