A new Sony console is being prepared for a fall launch

The PlayStation 2 has recently been taken out of production by Sony and it seems that the demise of the older device will continue as specialist retail store Gamestop announces that it will no longer accept hardware or video game trade-ins starting on June 1.

The information comes from signs spotted by Reddit users and it's likely that other stores will quickly take the same decision.

This will probably lead to the development of a more informal secondary market for PlayStation 2 hardware and software.

The PS2 has generated 150 million sales since it was launched and has a library of more than 10,000 titles.

At the moment Sony is working on the PlayStation 4 home consoles, which is expected to launch before the end of the year on all major markets.

It will deliver increased processing power, more interactivity and a focus on content streaming.
