A concept developed by The Aphrodite Project

Technology and communications influence each aspect of our daily lives, and it seems that now, sex workers will benefit from their advantages. Thus, an organization called the Aphrodite Project has developed a concept of sandals which have the typical design of shoes worn by prostitutes (those shoes also known as "platforms"), but integrate the latest communication technologies.

These hi-tech sandals will be fitted with an LCD screen, speakers, wi-fi Internet connection and a GPS tracking system, all of these elements having the purpose of offering a higher level of safety for this category of workers with a very dangerous line of business. Thus, the speakers are connected to an audio system, which generates a very piercing noise, meant to scare attackers off. Moreover, besides the GPS receiver, which will be used for tracking the sandals wearer's whereabouts, they'll also have an alarm button, which triggers a silent alarm and alerts the authorities.

The shoes broadcast their location by using APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System), a system that uses amateur radio to transmit position reports, weather reports, and messages between users. It is free and open to the public, and used by police officers, fire fighters, and other public service workers across the country to track their locations.

Obviously, some commercial applications could be found for this product, as, for example commercials running on the LCD screen, but their success is quite improbable, considering the wearer's line of work. In any case, it's an interesting initiative, one that could even spark a migration from Internet Caf?s to red light districts across the world.
