PopCap Games and Electronic Arts have just revealed a series of fresh details and artwork concerning the eight all-new characters that are available in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare via the newly-released Legend of the Lawn free update.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare appeared earlier this year, first on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 platforms, afterwards on the PC, and finally on the PS4 and PS3 devices back in August.

The game delivers a third-person shooter experience with both online cooperative and competitive experiences, all modeled after the original Plants vs. Zombies tower defense series, with many shooter game modes and features.

Since the title's debut, PopCap has launched plenty of free updates and downloadable content, designed to add new modes, maps, and customization options to both main factions.

Legend of the Lawn update brings plenty of new things

Now, the next major update made its debut yesterday, September 30, across all platforms, and is titled Legend of the Lawn. After sharing some details a short time ago about the Taco Bandits mode and the various enhancements to the shooter experience, PopCap's Lead Gameplay Designer, Chris Fox, has talked on the PS blog about the eight new character variants available in the add-on.

In the new patch, the studio has added one fresh variant to all eight character classes, across the plants and zombies factions.

Zombies get more powerful characters

First up, for the undead, there's the new Centurion soldier, who wields a powerful crossbow that's semi-automatic and quite accurate, while adding fire damage to its projectiles. The Sanitation Expert engineer can throw explosive garbage bags that inflict toxic damage to plants caught in the detonation area.

The Paleontologist scientist has a wacky dinosaur suit and wields a molten magma blaster that also has fire damage. Last but not least, the Golf Star offers a sniper variation on the traditional All Star brute, using a golf cannon with the fastest fire rate in the game to score critical hits.

Plants also see buffs to their classes

On the plant side, there's the new Plasma Pea Shooter, which can fling rapid-fire plasma balls at enemies, while rocking a futuristic look. The Alien Flower can shoot projectiles that explode on impact and create a spore mist that damages anyone who walks through it.

The Chomp Thing chomper has bonus health regeneration, in order to increase its survivability when jumping into combat. There's also the Jade Cactus, which is heavily armored and has the highest health in its class. It also has a new weapon that deals explosive damage on direct hits or builds up in power and explodes when it sticks to the environment.
