They say it's for a noble cause

News about the global financial recession has reached every corner of the world during the past weeks and the losses seem to be hard if not impossible to be stopped; culminating with a mind-boggling $2,800,000,000,000 announced loss in the world's financial markets, things aren't looking good at all. Well, the situation is gloomy only for some, or so it seems after reading about the latest creation coming from Plantronics: a headset that defies pretty much any notion we had on issues like "luxury" and "expensive."

We're talking about a very special Bluetooth headset, codenamed the Discovery 925 Jewel, a piece of art, as some say, and at the same time a futile display of opulence, according to others.

The Plantronics Discovery 925 Jewel is all about showing off as it does not boast any technology breakthrough and neither could we speak about a product that's well above the rest. Made from 18K gold and studded with diamonds and pearls, the Plantronics Discovery 925 Jewel comes with a breathtaking 50,000 pound sterling price: that's somewhere around the $100,000 mark, if you're not that familiar with the British currency. And $100K for a Bluetooth headset is a bit exaggerated (please drop the "a bit" part), and most of you probably agree.

Even if the tech specs aren't available, constructive details have surfaced and we can tell you that the Plantronics Discovery 925 Jewel will put 40 diamonds and 31 natural pearls in you ear. According to our fellow-gadgeteers from ElectricPig, Luc Ackaert from Plantronics/Altec Lansing stated that this special piece of technology would be auctioned off for charity. Indeed, charity is a neat idea, but if you put in balance $100,000 with the free-falling financial markets around the globe, things become almost hilarious.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether bad news from your broker sounds a bit less bitter and frightening when delivered via this crazy-expensive headset. We strongly think not.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
