The free-to-play MMO shooter is targeting 1080p and 60 frames per second on PS4

Sony Online Entertainment's massively multiplayer online free-to-play first-person shooter for PC is also coming to the PlayStation 4 soon, and it seems that console players will get a bit of aiming assistance.

The developer promises that the game will offer the exact same experience it offers on PC, and that everything will be fundamentally the same, with the understandable exception of the controls, which will be altered to fit controller use and will thus benefit from aim assist on the PS4.

Planetside 2 was released on PC in 2012, and it’s scheduled to arrive on the PlayStation 4 platform sometime later this year. The devs have assured fans of the shooter that the game will run smoothly and will have visuals on par with the PC version on Ultra, and that nothing will be pared down.

"What we're doing, you know, Planetside has a lot of stuff, like there's a lot to do. We have support for platoons which are groups of 46 people, we have outfits which are our version of guilds, we have everything you would expect from an MMO, we have those supporting features.

"So we didn't feel a need to do any variations," SOE's senior game designer, Luke Sigmund, has told The Examiner when asked whether there will be any content exclusive to either one of the game's versions.

"I guess the biggest difference is gonna be in the controls. We're doing the standard stuff, you know, adding aim-assist. We're making sure you can actually hit with the controller," he continued.

Sony Online Entertainment is most likely expecting some backlash regarding this decision, but in the end, it won't affect anyone's experience directly, since the PC and PS4 players will never meet in-game, as Planetside 2 will not feature cross-platform play.

"I think the big thing is, even though we're bringing it from the PC, we really wanna make sure that if feels right for the console players. And so, things like aim-assist are typical on a console environment, like with Battlefield or Call of Duty, [developers on those games] spend a lot of time just perfecting that way it feels, that moment-to-moment, where on the PC, it's just one-to-one, like, your mouse is where you're aiming.

"It's not necessarily about making it better or worse, it's just about making it right for the PS4," Clint Worley, the game's executive producer, chimed in.

Planetside 2 is scheduled to launch on the PlayStation 4 later this year. You can check out the game's presentation from Sony's E3 2014 panel below for more information.
