The Sony Online Entertainment division of the video game publisher has announced that it is currently working on PlanetSide 2, a re-imagined version of its well-known mix between an MMO and a first-person shooter.
The game is set to deliver an experience that is close to the original, including massive battles, empires with distinct personalities and a mix between ground, vehicle and aerial combat, while also delivering a host of new features.
One of the features of PlanetSide 2 is the freedom a player will have to create a character that matches his approach to the gamer, mixing skills taken from various branches, with unique empire mechanics and an added need to complement the abilities of his battle comrades.
As the game progresses, players will unlock both classes and weapons that will allow them to become more specialized and better at their jobs.
Sony is also working on making the events of PlanetSide 2 more persistent and a new mission system will allow veteran players to create content that will become available to others.
The size of the battle maps in the MMO FPS will also be increased, allowing more players to take part in the engagements and 15 vehicles will be included at launch, allowing gamers to get access to more combat options and more firepower.
The factions for PlanetSide 2 include The Terran Republic, who are conservative in both politics and tactics, The New Conglomerate, freedom fighters that use more guerrilla tactics, and The Vanu Sovereignty, users of alien tech.
John Smedley, who is the president of
Sony Online Entertainment, has stated, “For years we’ve talked about creating another PlanetSide game, and we’re thrilled that technology has caught up with our vision. I’m incredibly impressed by what our team has done with PlanetSide 2. They’ve made everything as big, bold and brutal as possible. PlanetSide 2 is truly representative of what a next generation MMOFPS will look and feel like.”
Sony has not mentioned a launch date for PlanetSide 2.
