PlanetSide 2 managed to beat the world record for the biggest first-person shooter battle in history, thus getting back its crown thanks to a whopping 1,158 players who showed up for the event.

The former record belonged to Man vs. Machine, a video game created for the sole purpose of breaking the record, which was only available for a single day. After a new record was successfully set, with a total of 999 players taking part in a massive battle, the game was dismantled.

Sony Online Entertainment and Planetsidebattles, the online community group, called to gamers worldwide last week to take part in the event to set a new record for most players online in a single first-person shooter battle.

They managed to pull off the feat and dethrone 2012's record holder, with an impressive 1,158 concurrent users engaged in a cyclopean, three-faction skirmish.

Those involved reported a ton of lag, which is to be expected when so many players rush to a single area at once.

PlanetSide 2 prides itself on its massive-scale battles, but this was completely ridiculous by any reference, and many gamers admitted to having a blast, in spite of all the lag making things complicated.

PlanetSide 2 just landed on the PS4

Sony Online Entertainment launched the closed beta test of the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system last week in North America, and announced that European players would be able to enjoy it starting sometime in February.

The stated goal was to get as many console owners as possible to try out the free-to-play shooter, and SOE mentioned that the game might eventually go into open beta, ahead of its launch on the platform.

PlanetSide 2 has been available on PC for quite some time now, and one of the goals of the beta was to see how well it would translate to the PlayStation 4, especially as far as its control scheme is concerned.

The developers tried really hard to adjust the game to the console interface and to make everything accessible and smooth for people enjoying PlanetSide 2 with a DualShock 4 controller, and urged those who are able to try out the game to share their feedback with the team.
