Visit your hometown

When Google decided to offer free access to Google Maps' API, many programmers had a revelation: they were able to play with one of the most fascinating applications. Google's officials were also curious to see what new products the programmers' imagination will spawn.

And it didn't take long before the results appeared. From applications that allow users to run Google Maps on the cell phones to dating sites where you can preview the geographic area where you'll have the next date, the programmers have everything.

One of them has decided to combine Google Maps and Wikipedia. The result is called Placeopedia, a site where you can visit places and read about the main attractions.

Currently, the only country which can be visited in this way is the UK and any English person can see his/her hometown by typing in the zip code.

Let's hope that Placeopedia will extend to other countries as well or that other programmers will come up with similar projects.

This week, Softpedia would like to know your opinion on gaming consoles. What is your favorite console you either own or you are planning to buy? Are you an Xbox fan or a Playstation fan? Has Xbox360 convinced you it's time to buy one? Or you'll wait for the PS3? Express your opinion here.
