Randy Pitchford, the leader of the team at Gearbox, says that his studio is currently not working on Borderlands 3 but that there are two entirely new intellectual properties that are at the moment in active development.

He tells Polygon that when a sequel is finally created it should offer a lot more gameplay than the currently available title.

Pitchford adds, "It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It’s probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future."

The executive believes that his studio already knows what a third game in the series should deliver but has not yet nailed down the core gameplay mechanics that it should use.

He adds, "We know we want it and we know it should exist, but we don’t know what it is yet. But we are doing things in Borderlands that we’ll announce soon, that are good, and that I think people will be really excited about if you love the franchise."

Borderlands 2 is set to get access to new downloadable content, called Sir Hammerlock and the Son of Crawmerax, in April.

The team has suggested that it does not have plans to offer more content for the title after that.

At the moment Gearbox is working on remaking the Homeworld titles that it acquired the rights to in 2013 and the company also has plans to create another game in the Brothers in Arms franchise.

It's unclear what the two new intellectual properties that are in development will relate to, but fans will hope that at least one of them is Homefront 3.

An official announcement from the company might come as soon as E3 2014.
