Expanding its support for video pins that only included YouTube until now

Pinterest is one of the success stories of the last few months due to the huge interest it's managed to attract, along with a massive and growing number of users. Part of the appeal is the simplicity and the aesthetics of the site, to be expected since the whole essence of it are the pinned thumbnails that you get to show off.

While much of what gets pinned are photos, there are also videos. Until now, Pinterest has only supported YouTube videos, but it is now adding Vimeo to the list.

Vimeo is clearly not the second most popular video site in the world, or even in the US, but it's the only credible alternative to the YouTube juggernaut and has always been a cooler one.

Artsy movies and projects end up on Vimeo more often than on YouTube. Those same videos should be a perfect fit for Pinterest which, while decidedly more mainstream than Vimeo, has the same appeal for nice visuals.

"The Pin It bookmarklet can now pin Vimeo videos in addition to YouTube! Pinning from Vimeo works the same way that pinning from YouTube does," Pinterest announced.

As always, you'll need the Pin It bookmarklet to add Vimeo videos to your profile, though you can also add them manually, by URL, of course. A bookmarklet is essentially a bookmark that you can add to your browser, that runs a snippet of code rather than point to a website.

"Then you can pin from Vimeo.com and from pages that have embedded Vimeo videos. Or, just browse and watch some pinned videos by going to the Video feed," Pinterest added.

In the meantime, Pinterest keeps on growing at astounding rates. Instagram got bought this week for a huge sum, but it only had some 30, maybe 40, million users. Pinterest seems poised to get passed that sooner rather than later.
