In December, the controversial singer and star Pink (real name, Alecia Moore) took part in what can only be described as one of PETA's most shocking ads and campaigns. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization has long targeted Australian wool industry as one of the most cruel on the planet and this was the right time to finally say (and do) something about it.
They contacted Pink, presented her with the idea for the ad and went to work. In the shocking footage, the singer talks about the practice of mulesing (a unique practice that consists of cutting flesh from the rear end of sheep to prevent fly and maggot infestation, prompted by the hot and humid weather) that Australian farmers usually resort to and about the horrible conditions sheep are transported from Australia to other countries for their flesh.
Pink's words were superimposed to images of sheep being cut or infested with maggots. The result was something that definitely was not meant for those with a weaker heart. As much as the ad shocked the world and got many other celebrities to join PETA, in Australia things were totally different.
Peter Costello, the Australian Treasurer voiced his outrage at Pink's words, saying she should have checked her facts better before speaking out against something on which so many people literally depend for a living. 'You know, Pink is entitled to her views but, at the end of the day, would Australia's farmers take advice from Pink? Sheep are at risk of being fly-blown and dying... it's not a pretty sight. Mulesing is not a pretty sight either but it's a damn sight more humane than letting a sheep die fly-blown in a paddock', Costello said.
Until now, the singer refused to answer to the above but, seeing that she is currently preparing for her Australian tour, scheduled to kick off in March, Pink began to have second thoughts about PETA and issued an apology, in which she admitted that she participated in the ad without knowing all the facts beforehand.
'I probably could have been a lot more researched, on my own. That's the lesson I'm taking from this. My message was, in my mind, boycott animal cruelty - not an entire industry, not Australia, obviously, because it's my favorite country.', Pink said in her apology, aired on Nine Network television. What's a girl to do? The show must go on and, plus, there's one's personal interest that always reigns...
Below is PETA's clip on mulesing.
