Josh Sawyer, the leader of the team working on Pillars of Eternity, says that his team has long-term plans for the universe and that it wants the role-playing title to set up interesting stories and character dilemmas that could be explored in future games.

He tells Eurogamer that, “Pillars of Eternity is indicative of not just the story but of the world. Pillars of Eternity is something that's specific to the world, not this one story. We hope that, as time goes on, and as we make more games and stories and stuff in the setting, that that name is appropriate for the world and setting overall.”

Obsidian is making sure that the progression system for the main character is designed to allow more levels to be added in potential sequels.

At the same time, members of the player-designed party and the stronghold he can build and upgrade might also be part of future experiences.

Sawyer adds, “Whether it's a direct sequel or something else... If we put in the time and the energy to not only develop the technology but also develop this world and the characters and all that stuff, it just makes sense for us to keep making games in it if people like it.”

Sawyer goes on to joke that a lot of pillars are required to hold up eternity, which means that plenty of titles can be created by Obsidian.

The new game is based on traditional role-playing mechanics and will focus on a player party that will explore complex locations and will deal with enemies using turn-based tactical battles.

Pillars of Eternity is set to be launched on the PC in the second half of this year and the entire development process is being shared with those who backed the game on Kickstarter.
