The development team at Obsidian says that, with one week away from the launch date for Pillars of Eternity, it is already exploring ideas for a potential expansion to the role-playing game and it plans to model it on the content that expanded the classic Baldur's Gate.

The size of the planned new areas will be about the same as what fans received in Tales of the Sword Coast, as Adam Brennecke, a lead artist at the studio, explains in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, and it seems that the company already has some clear ideas about the new story and mechanics.

He adds, "I won't reveal much about it since it's early in development, but we've already have a small team working on areas and environments while the rest of the team focus on shipping the game. We will announcing more things about it over the next few months."

Tales of the Sword Coast for the original Baldur's Gate was pretty tough in terms of difficulty, and it seems that Obsidian also wants to test the capabilities of fans with the new content planned for Pillars of Eternity.

The studio is also suggesting that it will not test the skills of newcomers too early in the core campaign for the title and will allow them to first experience the world and the mechanics before they face truly tough opponents.

Pillars of Eternity aims to introduce a classic role-playing game experience

Obsidian also claims that there are hundreds of ideas that they had to cut from Pillars of Eternity in order to make sure that they kept up with their self-imposed schedule.

The company has also done extensive testing in order to try and make sure that progression means that there are no moments when the player is overpowered when compared to the challenges they are facing.

Pillars of Eternity is designed to offer a new fantasy environment, which borrows elements from existing ones but also has entirely new concepts.

The mechanics of the coming title aim to deliver a pure take on the role-playing genre, with tactical combat that allows players to evaluate each situation and find a solution based on the powers of their characters.

Pillars of Eternity will be out on the PC on March 26.
