The FDA-approved pill camera costs a lot less than a colonoscopy

The other day, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its stamp of approval for the PillCam pill-sized camera.

I didn't have the price to share with you all at the time, but now I do: the small item will cost $500 / €500.

That's a lot less than a full colonoscopy costs, although, granted, the pill can't replace fully invasive procedures yet. It lacks the advanced imaging of standard procedures.

Still, many authorities in the field of medicine believe that there will be significant demand for the new invention, because while it does lack video quality, it can reach parts of the colon that standard procedures can't reach.

“I think that there’s going to be a real demand for this, and although they’re occasional cases, we look at this as a very good way to evaluate portions of the colon that we haven’t seen,” Douglas Rex, a doctor at Indiana University said.
