A fanless, metallic enclosure, it should cost less than $100 / €75

Mini personal computers need special hardware to be feasible, and that includes cases. A growing trend is that of fanless enclosures. As it happens, Gigabyte has just made one.

It hasn't released the thing yet. Indeed, the company didn't, technically, make a formal introduction of it either.

However, the most relevant press shots did make their way to the Internet, as certain people were all too glad to let the world see.

You can see the thin chassis with its 120W external power supply (12V), a bunch of ATX power connectors, and a stand that keeps the thing upright. Well, actually tilted backwards, but still vertically, more or less.

Gigabyte named this product the Essence mini-ITX case and gave it enough room for a mini-ITX motherboard and a 2.5-inch drive.

All in all, the Gigabyte Essence measures 300 x 234 x 74 mm / 11.81 x 9.21 x 2.91 inches and has a price of $130 in Japan, or at least the equivalent. Don't be alarmed, though. It won't sell for more than $100 / €75 - €100 in Europe and the US. Well, probably.

If you're thinking of putting together a totally silent, fanless, low-power miniature PC, the Gigabyte Essence may be the case for you. Not sure when availability will expand though.
