Last week AMD went official with its new lineup of RV770-based graphics cards. But besides the HD 4850 and HD 4870 models that have been expected by every AMD fan out there, some even thought that the manufacturer would release a dual-core version of its next-generation flagship model, the HD 4870. Unfortunately for them, that was not the case, but still the company is rumored to release such a card soon enough.

A while ago, we brought you news about recent rumors according to which AMD was going to introduce a dual-core HD 4870 X2 card, as a response to NVIDIA's GTX280 flagship model. Back then there were bits of details to go on, but it seems that the new card has been pictured and posted on the Chiphell website. The leaked images display a stripped-down ATI Radeon graphics card that has two GPUs on a single PCB. Although the images don't completely reveal it, this is the HD 4870 X2, the general belief hints in that direction.

Contrary to previous expectations, AMD's upcoming card will sport a total of 2GB of GDDR5 memory, but according to the leaked pictures, the card will only feature 1GB of graphics memory, using Qimonda chips.

To further support these rumors, Digitimes has cited some sources at graphics card vendors and, apparently, AMD will launch its dual-GPU 4870 X2 by the end of July, with the cards expected to hit the stores sometime in August. Their price should be around 499 USD, which means that AMD has high hopes regarding its new high-end graphics card lineup.

If we were to believe these rumors, the HD 4870 X2 might be AMD's Super RV770 graphics card that has been much talked about recently and believed to be the piece with which Advanced Micro Devices hopes to become the leading manufacturer of graphics cards.
