The brain belonged to a person that died back in 1970

Unless explicitly told that the picture above shows a human brain, most people would jump to the conclusion that the weird thing featured in it is some very profound and unintelligible modern sculpture.

And, in all fairness, nobody could blame them for doing so.

Still, the fact remains that the odd item pictured above is an actual human brain. One that lacks ridges and folds, and which is entirely smooth, to be more precise.  New Scientist tells us that the brain belonged to a person who died back in 1970. It is still unknown whether this person was a man or a woman.

The only thing researchers know about him/her is that, for a while, this individual was a patient at a mental health facility in Texas.

Specialists say that, judging by how the brain looks, this person must have suffered from a rare medical conditions dubbed lissencephaly. This condition is linked to muscle spasms, seizures and learning difficulties.

Those who have it usually die before they reach the age of 10.
