Whale watching is probably one of the best pastime activities out there. Still, it sometimes happens that people who go whale watching get more than they bargained for.

The picture above was taken in Monterey Bay, California just a few days ago. It shows a humpback whale surfacing incredibly close to a kayaker.

In fact, word has it that the woman need only have extended her arm to touch the marine mammal.

Daily Mail tells us that the picture was taken by marine biologist Giancarlo Thomae, who later told the press that being this close to a humpback whale truly was a one-of-a-kind experience.

“We were kayak whale watching and the whales just came right up to us. The whole encounter that happened between Karen and I lasted about three-quarters of a second,” the marine biologist said.

“Humpback whales are very curious and playful animals and get very friendly with kayakers and boaters - although maybe sometimes a bit too friendly,” he added.
