The white lion cubs featured in the picture above are currently living at the Lion Park animal sanctuary in Johannesburg, South Africa. Apparently, this wildlife park specializes in breeding and looking after such unique big cats.

At the time the picture was taken, the cubs were merely 4-days-old, which is why they were having a rather difficult time keeping their eyes open.

Kirsty Trusler, the lion cubs' caretaker, explains that these adorable furballs owe their peculiar body color to a recessive gene which they got from both their parents.

Thus, contrary to what some might assume, these lions are not albinos, but a genetic rarity known to be native to the Timbavati region in South Africa.

Due to the fact that white lions are extremely rare, the people living in Africa consider them to be sacred animals, Daily Mail informs us.
