It seems that with every new day we see more and more tablet products being released on the market. But they are all aiming in the same direction, to be thinner, lighter and faster; yet, bottom line is they can achieve pretty much the same things.

However, there are certain individuals who won’t settle for consumer electronics and this is the case of Michael Caster who set out to build a tablet starting from a Raspberry Pi (a Linux computer the size of a credit card). He calls his invention the PiPad and the slate boasts a nifty wood and carbon fiber case.

Michael wanted a device that was “usable, portable and Linux-based” and could be used on airplanes too (apparently, flying companies don’t like DIY electronics much) so he set out to create his dream.

If you’d like to try your hand at building a tablet of your own, Michael offers an extensive list of instructions, suggestions and even CAD designs on his website, so if you’re interested, head on over and take a look.
