Solid State Drives continue to grow in numbers, with new technology providing a choice for a more affordable, faster storage solution that addresses the requirements of the consumer segment. On that note, PhotoFast has decided to further expand its SSD portfolio by preparing the introduction of its new G-Monster V4 line of 1.8-inch solid state drives. Available in three different versions, these solutions provide consumers with a choice for a 40-pin ZIF, 44-pin IDE or 50-pin IDE connection interfaces.

Solid state drives can deliver a storage solution that is both more energy-efficient and better performing than traditional hard disk drives. Based on NAND Flash-memory, these silent storage solutions are seen as a possible replacement for today's traditional hard disk drives, but at the current price/GB ratio, the majority of SSDs on the market aren't affordable to the mainstream user.

PhotoFast's upcoming G-Monster 1.8-inch V4 line of drives will be available in capacities ranging from 32 to 256GB, featuring a MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory technology. In addition, the drives' specifications include 64MB of cache memory, enabling them to work at read and write speeds of up to 128MB/s and 90MB/s, respectively. To further sweeten the offer, the company has also integrated an active garbage collection function, designed to clean up the date marked for deletion when the drive is in idle mode, thus ensuring that write performance is maintained after extensive use.

Having an 1.8-inch form factor, these drives make an excellent choice for an ultraportable storage solution. Unfortunately, as it is with unreleased products, we have no specific details regarding their pricing and availability. Still, the company is expected to release them backed by a one-year warranty.

I am looking for a fast and affordable replacement for the Toshiba 4200 rpm 1.8" drive in my Vaio TZ-notebook. I hope this is the solution as the hd really is too slow for this otherwise well performing little notebook!
