Pope Francis has been named the Person of the Year 2013 by Time Magazine and, while I’m sure we all agree that there was no better choice for this distinction, it’s funny to see that the odd placement of the letter “M” in “Time” is again making the delight of commenters online.

As you can see in the photo above (courtesy of Fredo and Pid’Jin), the Pope appears to be sporting a pair of very small but still quite visible Devil horns. The irony doesn’t go unappreciated, especially since this is the Pope we’re talking about and he’s being honored for his good work this year.

However, fear not of joining in the collective fun because you’re probably not going to hell if you do (I think). Time actually has a long and very colorful history of putting “horns” on public figures’ heads, which is thoroughly documented here, in this ABC News gallery.

The fact that it chooses to have the name in the background, behind whoever is on the cover, means that, sometimes, the “M” peaks out right on top of that person’s head, making it look as if they’ve grown horns.

So Pope Francis is in select company, because Time did it before to the likes of George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, and Bill Gates, to name just a few. And every time it did so, the people at home / the Internet had a blast with it.
