This photo might make you give up swimming in the ocean, at least for a while

One can only assume that there are a lot of people in this world who much enjoy going swimming in the ocean or riding some really wicked waves whenever they have some time to spare.

Some of these people might even think that they are alone when enjoying such activities, but, as it turns out, they could not be more wrong.

The photo above, which was taken by award-winning National Geographic photographer David Liitschwager, documents the content of a single drop of seawater.

As one can easily notice, such a small amount of water contains a surprisingly wide variety of ocean dwellers, including bacteria, worms, fish eggs, crab larvae and other critters that most people do not even know exist.

And yes, every time seawater enters a person's mouth, it brings these creatures with it. I don't know about you, but I for one have to admit that, now that I know this, I am seriously considering giving up swimming.

“Under a magnifier, a splash of seawater teems with life,” the National Geographic photographer commented on this picture, as cited by Daily Mail.

“The planktonic soup includes bug-like copepods; long, glassy arrowworms; coiled filaments of cyanobacteria; rectangular algae called diatoms; fish eggs; and a big-eyed larval crab the size of a rice grain,” he further detailed.
