- 10-year-old girl writes to Obama to congratulate him for standing up for gay marriage |
|
Here is something to make even the blackest of hearts turn a lighter shade of grey. One girl from San Diego, Sophia Bailey Klugh by her name, aged just 10, wrote to the President to congratulate him on his stance on same-gender marriage – and he wrote back.
Neither letter is new, since the exchange took place earlier this month but Thanksgiving feels like the perfect time to bring it up.
Click on the image above to read Sophia’s letter: she tells Obama she wrote to him before to ask him over for dinner but he never showed up. It’s ok, she understands he’s a busy man.
Either way, she wants to congratulate him on his stance on same-gender marriage, mostly because she too has two daddies and she knows better than anyone else that love is love no matter the color, the age or the gender.
She is also happy the President is standing up for gay rights because, this way, perhaps kids won’t make fun of her anymore one day.
Even more amazing is that the President wrote back, as The Huffington Post reports.
“In America, no two families look the same. We celebrate this diversity. And we recognize that whether you have two dads or one mom what matters above all is the love we show one another. You are very fortunate to have two parents who care deeply for you. They are lucky to have such an exceptional daughter in you,” Obama wrote to the little girl.
As for her question on what should she do when kids make fun of her for having two dads, Obama wrote simply: “A good rule is to treat others the way you hope they will treat you. Remind your friends at school about this rule if they say something that hurts your feelings.”
He also wants her to know that he will definitely say hi to his daughters from her, even though he could never make the time to come over for dinner.

| Comment #2.1 by: dltav on 22 Nov 2012, 15:46 GMT | On the one hand I feel such pity for someone like you with your narrow minded view; but since your bigotry and prejudice effects all of us in this country in such a negative way, the truth is I feel sorry for us that we have to share this planet with mean spirited people like you. |
| Comment #2.2 by: lovie on 22 Nov 2012, 16:05 GMT | kdj, Get a life! S & G happen because of a natural disaster. People are people and love is love. If we had more that and less of your uptight Christian myths and intolerance we would not be t war right now. |
| Comment #2.3 by: deals with idiots on 22 Nov 2012, 16:10 GMT | God never wanted to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because men were sodomizing men. It was because men were sodomizing Angels in the streets. But this is also a myth like the rest of the bible. But if you want to believe there is an all powerful god guiding the hand of man, then you should believe that Barack Obama was re-elected by divine intervention. If you have an issue with his stance of gay marriage, I say , Let he who is without SIN cast the first stone. Remember YOUR good book says judge not lest ye be judged.
Happy Thanksgiving |
| Comment #2.4 by: Elizabeth on 22 Nov 2012, 20:30 GMT | The SIN in Sodom and Gomorrah was inhospitality! Get you facts right! |
| Comment #2.5 by: Pat on 23 Nov 2012, 02:02 GMT | He was not condoning anything as much as helping a little girl come to grips with her life. People can be so cruel. I do not condone a gay lifestyle, nor do I think it's cool. I put myself in the place of a parent that discovers her son or daughter is gay? Do you quit loving them, pretend that don't exist anymore? Deny the children? This is a little girl? I do agree that love can be a powerful thing, and unless we are in someone else's shoes, we should never say what we would do. How many of us said that we would never have an affair with someone married--of betray our spouse? Same thing. I think it's pretty big of Obama to assure a child that it's nothing to be ashamed of that she is a child of parents that are "different" She loves tham, and is confused enough. Hope he pres made a difference in her life. |
| Comment #2.6 by: Eww on 23 Nov 2012, 02:11 GMT | this is sick! I dont care what society the president says this is sick! |
| Comment #3.1 by: ObamaRox on 23 Nov 2012, 03:07 GMT | And don't forget that incest is okay because after the wholesale slaughter of the people of Gomorrah (including Lot's wife for 'disobeying' god's command), it says "Lot's daughters got him drunk and lay with him" so they could bear children. |
| Comment #4 by: Obama Fan on 22 Nov 2012, 15:27 UTC | reply to this comment | As they say "out of the mouths of babes".....the wisdom of a 10 year old child is what America should be looking at...this is our world and we need to embrace it.. |

| Comment #8 by: Thank You on 22 Nov 2012, 15:52 UTC | reply to this comment | I would love to read more news like this. Can we create a special good news day and use all media to focus on positive things going on in this world? Media plays a significant role in shaping our reality. How about shaping it one day out of 365 on stories of great common people and the good deeds and thoughts conveyed? It may brighten as many lives as this article did. Thank you for posting it. |
| Comment #8.1 by: Elena Gorgan on 22 Nov 2012, 16:41 GMT | Thank you for the wonderful words. It was, I will admit, one of the most touching stories I have covered in recent months: a truly touching moment that needed to be mentioned. Sophia is a blessing, indeed. |
| Comment #8.2 by: Babzuptown on 22 Nov 2012, 21:21 GMT | I so agree |
| Comment #9 by: mickey on 22 Nov 2012, 15:54 UTC | reply to this comment | i think that love has no color, race, or gender. love should be unconditional and i feel like if you find that with someone know matter what sex if its for real then let it be. we are not here to judge. God is our judge not man. stop putting so much time into things that arent important our country has enough bigger problems to worry about. if we come together as a nation this would not be a topic to dwell on. so people lets get it together. focus on other things you can control who someone falls in love with. |
| Comment #10 by: Albert on 22 Nov 2012, 15:59 UTC | reply to this comment | It is a beautiful story, and it shows what a great man the President is. He took the time to write this little girl and make her feel better. |

| Comment #14 by: cee cee on 22 Nov 2012, 16:32 UTC | reply to this comment | Very touching. Sodom and Gomorrah were of the world. Some things are in the world. Christ was in the world not of the world. Loving your neighbor as you love yourself is the world. |

| Comment #16 by: raycib on 22 Nov 2012, 16:39 UTC | reply to this comment | Choildren don't know discrimination, just who loves them. They have to be taught to hate. Children don't have hate in their heart. |
| Comment #17 by: LH on 22 Nov 2012, 16:48 UTC | reply to this comment | President Obama is a very caring person and wants everyone to have a fair shot at a happy life. |
| Comment #21 by: leigh on 22 Nov 2012, 17:38 UTC | reply to this comment | I think President Obama, sweet reply to Sofia's letter to him and his apology for not coming over to her house for dinner. Shows the qualities of character that prompted me to vote for our newly re-elected President.
I am so touched and proud that our president, one of the leaders of the free world and the busiest and burdened people too, found it in his heart and made the time to reply to that young lady speaks volumes about Mr Obama's kindness and good character!!

| Comment #28 by: Alena on 22 Nov 2012, 20:01 UTC | reply to this comment | Altho I don't agree with same sex marriage because of my Biblical understanding, I do embrace loving people as they are and I appreciate the President being very accepting of others and being kind and loving. I have not voted for him either time but I am praying for him and I have gained a greater appreciation for him and I love him. |
| Comment #29 by: Alena on 22 Nov 2012, 20:02 UTC | reply to this comment | The Bible is not a myth. I tire of hearing people quote it who do not understand it's meaning. It requires spiritual eyes to see. At the same time I appreciate our President's kindnesses and I embrace all people regardless of sex or gender. God does and I love you all. |

| Comment #32 by: Assenavale on 22 Nov 2012, 21:26 UTC | reply to this comment | This just makes me weep. If this doesn't touch your heart, and make you want to at least try to love your fellow man, you really have a black heart. Our president is a true man among men!!! |
| Comment #33 by: Jamaican dude on 22 Nov 2012, 21:29 UTC | reply to this comment | I've seen lives taken brutally relating to this kind of story, and I was never moved by the crimes. But this lil girl's story and the response the President gave to her brought tears that I was'nt prepare to shed. Riveting story: great response. |
| Comment #35 by: Babbka on 22 Nov 2012, 23:07 UTC | reply to this comment | My thoughts? I am proud of this little girl and happy she has a family that is stable. Same sex So what. I was married 3 times to males and I am female. Big deal. I just buried my daughter in San Diego and I had not spoken to her for 4 years. What is important is only this communication and love. The mystics say that it is not an abomination. In the beginning you had to procreate. Well, do you think we have enough people? I do. These same sex or not same sex need to be able to adopt so we may have less kids in jails, A good functional home with respect and love says a lot. I pray for our president. He is a great man. I love that he is working hard to teach this country to get along and stop wasting time on war. I am 73 years old and know in my heart that he wants that Little But Mighty country in the Middle East to live Not die. No one is better then anyone else. Just different. Can you imagine us all being the same? We would never learn anything. |
| Comment #36 by: Donna on 23 Nov 2012, 00:44 UTC | reply to this comment | I think it shows Obamas character as being one who truly cares about Americans, even 10 year olds. If he were to get cooperation from the House and Senate think what a Country this could be! |
| Comment #37 by: TETE on 23 Nov 2012, 01:10 UTC | reply to this comment | it is so sweet, to find out about this kind of kids, they are very smart y careful, and is amazing the President's response. He is a great guy, no matter he is the President of USA. |
| Comment #38 by: kaybee on 23 Nov 2012, 03:07 UTC | reply to this comment | Such a smart little girl, we as grownups can learn from our children if we just take the time to listen. It's wonderful that President Obama wrote her back as I'm sure it meant a lot to her, especially his advice for dealing with kids at school. Congrats to her dads as they are raising a very smart and thoughtful child. |
| Comment #39 by: MrTea on 23 Nov 2012, 03:18 UTC | reply to this comment | The people here snarking at Christians who might disagree with same-sex marriage should go try being gay or advocating it somewhere else, like a Muslim country for instance. Or even just south of San Diego a bit. There they will do a lot worse to you than just say something you might not like. Curious how it seems only in the countries with white, Christian majorities is it safe to have gay freedom day parades. Go try having one in Beijing or Cairo.
I'm o.k. with gay marriage but I have friends who feel justified in their resistance based on the impressionability of children. Scoff if you like, but I work in the schools and encounter kids who have been socialized by the likes of "Family Guy" and "South Park". How young is too young for overt sex references? I've had them coming out to the mouths of 2nd graders. Next stop, group action at 13! 12? |

This lifestyle is a very sensitive subject. I am amazed that the president answered the letter. |
