This past weekend, on Sunday, folks exploring Sydney Harbor in Australia got to witness a scene most of us will probably never get to experience first-hand.

Long story short, they chanced to see a huge humpback whale hurling its body out of the water, putting on quite an impressive aerial display, and then landing back in the ocean.

According to Daily Mail, the event was caught on camera by Jonas Liebschner, the cruise director of Whale Watching Sydney, who proved cool enough to share the photos with us, ordinary folks.

As easily noticeable in the picture above and the one below, humpback whales are surprisingly graceful creatures. This is despite the fact that they can grow to weigh several dozen tons.

Commenting on the opportunity to take pictures of this specimen just as it was busy showing off its underwater ballet skills, Jonas Liebschner stated as follows:

“It only jumped once so I was very lucky to see that. And it was a perfect way to finish off the day as the tour was coming to an end.”

By the looks of it, humpback whales are currently on their way to warm waters, where they will breed and deliver their young. Hence, chances are that folks in Australia will get to see several other such marine mammals in the days to come.
