Customers of Regions Bank are currently targeted by a phishing scam that’s designed to trick them into handing over their personal and financial details. Potential victims are notified that their accounts have been accessed from a Singapore IP address.

“Our IT Department has just detected some suspicious activities on your Internet Banking Profile from an IP address located in Singapore. We have stopped the transaction for prevention against online theft and phishing attacks,” read the emails entitled “Alert: Important message on your account.”

“If you know you did not access your account from Singapore, kindly CLICK HERE to activate our new online IP protection on your account and prevent further access to your account from an unknown IP address.”

Millersmiles.co.uk reports that the links point to a phishing website registered with a German hosting provider that offers free webspace.

Currently, the phishing page – designed to mimic the Regions website – appears to be offline. However, the cybercriminals have probably set up the scam on other domains as well.

Regions customers, and the ones of other financial institutions, should always remember that banks and payment processors never request sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, and social security numbers.
