Several countries are quite committed to promoting sustainability and energy efficiency, and the US' imposing a ban on 40 and 60 watt incandescent light bulb stands as proof.

Technology company Phillips is well aware of this, and has recently unveiled a new LED light that it thinks is a worthy replacement for the countless fluorescent lighting tubes currently used in offices, shops and factories around the world.

In a press release, Phillips details that its new LED light burns over 40% less energy than your average fluorescent tube, which means that offices, shops and factories that choose to have it installed will considerably cut their yearly electricity costs.

Thus, Phillips estimates that companies that purchase this LED lamp will recover their initial investments in about one – three years.

What's more, the company claims that, should all the 12 billion tube sockets currently in place around the world be fitted with one such LED lamp instead of a fluorescent one, annual energy savings would amount to a whopping €42 billion ($57.13 billion).

The coolest thing about this new Phillips LED lamp is the fact that the model is compatible with existing fluorescent lighting fixtures. Hence the company's decision to name this innovative lighting option the InstantFit LED tube.

As explained on PR Newswire, “The Philips InstantFit LED replacement tube requires no re-wiring as it includes a smart electronic design that is compatible with existing electronic instant start ballasts and sockets.”

Furthermore, “The result is a dramatic reduction in the time it takes to change from fluorescent to TLED lighting – from over 20 minutes per fixture to a matter of seconds and an equally dramatic reduction in installation costs.”

Phillips estimates that, thanks to the lamp's design, the average supermarket can make the switch to LED lighting in four days, maybe even less. But for the lamp's being designed to be compatible with standard fluorescent lighting fixtures, the switch would have taken about four weeks.
