Nearly 12,000 Philips plasma TVs sold in the United States are vulnerable to overheating and the company has announced plans to visit customers' houses to repair a defect in these sets. Consumers will be contacted directly, and Philips declined to say how much the fix will cost the company.

A Philips spokesperson said the move was simply a "precaution" and noted there is no fire risk. Only 42-inch and 50-inch sets sold in the United States are affected by overheating and the glitch confined to the United States alone since the faulty capacitors are used in the assembly lines there.

The company said that it had received nine complaints and that the damage is caused within the TVs, no injuries being reported so far.

The faulty models are 42PF9630A/37, 50PF9630A/37, 50PF9630A/37 and 50PF9830A/37.
