Pharrell Williams has been having a very good year: his song “Happy” is huge and was even nominated for an Oscar, his album is selling well and he’s just been nominated for 9 Billboard awards as well. The other night on Ellen DeGeneres, he chose to divert attention from himself to plead for equality.

You will find a segment from the interview embedded below.

First off, Pharrell showed Ellen his fancy shoes, which he had Swarovski custom-make for him. I guess this means that all those shiny rocks are no regular rhinestones, but genuine Swarovski crystals.

He also explained the meaning behind the title of his most recent album “G I R L” and why he wanted it to be a step towards gender equality – or any kind of equality, come to think of it. On the topic, he thanked Ellen for being the first to play “Happy” when no radio station would touch it.

To crown Pharrell’s amazing year, Ellen offered him a hat that actually topped the Vivienne Westwood creation he’s been wearing for a few months now, and which he seems to have in every color. If you last until the end of the video, you will be amused to see how Pharrell ruins Ellen’s joke with one of his own, unintentional this time, by placing the very high hat on his lap.
