PfSense, a free, open source customized distribution of FreeBSD tailored for use as a firewall and router, is now at version 2.1.

PfSense 2.1 is a very big version and it's recommended for all installations. Users can upgrade from any previous release directly to version 2.1.

“This release brings many new features, with the biggest change being IPv6 support in most every portion of the system. There are also a number of bug fixes, and touch ups in general,” reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, the IPv6 support has been drastically improved, the distribution has received PBI (push button installer) package support, and the Atheros drivers have been updated.

PfSense 2.1 is based on FreeBSD 8.3 and it features newer packages for PHP, OpenVPN, and OpenSSL.
