New series based on comic book character is slated for 2016

This spring, we had to bid adieu to many new and older series, favorites or not, which had failed to perform as expected in the ratings. At the same time, networks announced a slew of other projects, one more interesting than the other.

Take for instance Fox’s “Lucifer,” slated for release in 2016, whose trailer you can find embedded below. It’s the story of the Devil, Lucifer Morningstar (points for not caring for subtlety), who moves to LA and helps the LAPD capture criminals because he’s too bored being the Lord of Hell.

The American Family Association’s One Million Moms wants “Lucifer” pulled from schedule, and they have launched a petition to convince network brass of why that would be the best course of action.

The premise of “Lucifer”

Lucifer Morningstar, played by handsome actor Tom Ellis, is described as “charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome.” Bored with his previous life, he moves to the City of Angels, where he opens a bar, so that he can still enjoy the best in terms of women, wine and music.

One very violent incident, which seems to take him by surprise as well, helps him cross paths with a beautiful and smart LAPD agent, who, for some reason, seems impervious to his “charms.” He decides to help her out in her ongoing investigations because he’s such a nice guy - and because he has the power to get people to be completely honest with him.

He may be pleased with his life, but God isn’t because his absence from Hell has upset the old balance. God sends the angel Amenadiel to bring Lucifer back, but he doesn’t want to.

New series “glorifies Satan” and “mocks the Bible”

As you can see, Satan doesn’t come across as the worst guy to spend an evening around, with writers clearly taking their cues from increased interest in anti-heroes on TV.

This time, though, they have taken things a bit too far, One Million Moms believes: the series is a disgrace because it “mocks the Bible” and tries to make Satan into this alluring character he is not. Because he is pure evil.

“The program previews mischaracterize Satan, departs from true biblical teachings about him, and inaccurately portrays the beliefs of the Christian faith,” the petition says. “By choosing to air this show, FOX is disrespecting Christianity and mocking the Bible.”

As of the time of writing, the petition has over 13,400 signatures, but Fox is yet to respond to the controversy in any way.

We should probably add that the series has only been picked up for one episode, which could mean it might not even see a full season if the pilot doesn’t sit well with audiences.
