Peter Moore Denies Killing the SEGA Dreamcast

The man who is known as having killed the Dreamcast SEGA home console sought to clarify his role in getting the Japanese company out of the hardware market.

In an interview with IndustryGamers Peter Moore, who is now the Chief Operations Officer at publisher Electronic Arts, said, “The idea of ‘making the call’ came out of an interview with Keith Stuart of The Guardian – when I said making the call, I was actually referring to the telephone call. He interpreted that as making the decision, and I was very much a part of the decision, but it certainly wasn’t just me telling the Japanese team that we need to get out of the console business.”

Moore was the man who talked to the press about the move to exit the hardware business but other executives were part of the process and agreed with the move from a business perspective.

Moore added, “It’s a difficult early period when you’re selling hardware because you’re not making a lot of money, and in some instances you’re losing money. We need to build an installed base and we just couldn’t get there.”

After his period at SEGA Peter Moore moved into the software business and served as the leader of the EA Sports division for a long time, becoming famous for the way he marketed popular franchises like Madden NFL and FIFA.

He has then been promoted to the role of COO at Electronic Arts.

Since the Dreamcast was discontinued, it has become a collector’s item, with enthusiasts ready to pay exorbitant prices in order to get replacement consoles and parts.

It is widely appreciated for the fact that it offered, on launch, online connectivity, in game voice chat and support for downloadable content.

Those who support the Dreamcast have also released new homebrew applications for it and there are also ports of modern titles that can be played on the SEGA home console.
