Peter Molyneux, the current leader of studio 22 Cans, was once a creative director at the main Microsoft-owned game studios and this position led to him being involved with the development of the new Xbox console that will be revealed on May 21.

The developer tells Edge that, “I’m going to be absolutely fascinated to see what they finally come out with, because I kind of knew a lot when I was at Microsoft about what their plans were, and plans change and aspirations change.”

Molyneux believes that Microsoft’s presentation will be expertly put together and that the entire team has tested a number of features before deciding which ones to include in the Xbox 720.

The creator of such titles as Fable, Black & White and Populous believes that the company needs to make sure that its final product is firmly aimed at hardcore gamers, even if some extra features are included to appeal to a wider audience.

He adds, “This is my personal feeling as a gamer. What I would do is double-down on what this console is for: it’s for playing games. It’s for playing console games for this massive, incredibly loyal audience of gamers out there.”

According to the developer, players have plenty of other devices they can use to check Facebook or even watch Netflix movies, but nothing but a dedicated gaming consoles can offer the experiences that the hardcore crowd is looking for.

The Xbox 720 needs to be able to deliver amazing video games on launch, which will probably happen before the end of 2013.

Peter Molyneux has already said he will be present at the Xbox 720 reveal because it offers an opportunity for a new project, although he is not yet ready to offer details.

His 22 Cans team is already working on Godus.
