Based on original ideas

For a long time, gamers have known that a title based on a blockbuster movie has more chances of flopping than of succeeding, while movie goers have long known to stay clear of those movie releases based on videogames. James Cameron, with his recent Avatar, did not manage to change this reality and now it seems that Peter Jackson is ready to give it a try.

The director, who has just released his latest movie, called The Lovely Bones, has told Ain't It Cool News that videogames are “using a lot of the film techniques now, especially the cinematic areas” and that he is “enjoying these games more than I am enjoying films at the moment.”

The movie director has also mentioned that “I am kind of involved with a Tintin game and obviously the beginning of The Hobbit game” and that other projects based on his movies might be in development. He has confessed to being interested in creating videogames that have no links to movie projects, because some of his current ideas are not well suited to the movie format.

Peter Jackson's previous involvement with videogames did not end too well. He was co-founder of a studio called Wingnut Interactive established in 2007, set to work on episodic content in the Halo universe, under the Chronicles label. Before the release of Halo 3: ODST last year, Jackson confirmed that the project was dead.

The Tintin gaming project is being handled by Ubisoft, which has also worked on Avatar, while a Hobbit-oriented videogames will probably be handled by one of the studios Warner Bros. recently bought. It's not clear to what extent Peter Jackson will be involved in the creation of these videogames.
