Yesterday, Babyshambles frontman attended a court hearing from his ongoing trial and submitted to the periodical drug check up. Only two hours later than the appointed time for the trial, Pete Doherty still managed to impress the judge with his progress.
The troubled rock star said in court that he plans to get a chemical implant put in his stomach, to help him fight off the desire to use drugs. He also mentioned that this is not the first time he's considering the technique, but this time he is really going to give it a serious try.
Judge Jane McIvor congratulated Doherty on his progress, but expressed her dissatisfaction at not getting a negative test result. Furthermore, she has high hopes that this will happen in about six months' time.
The finger-size implant seems to be the only alternative left for the relapsing drug addict, who already pleaded guilty on various drug charges, spent some time in a rehabilitation facility in Portugal and then started doing crack again.
On the up and down fight against cocaine addiction, the implant, after being introduced into the patient's stomach, is to release a drug that prevents opiates from having any effect whatsoever. Pete will have it introduced in almost two weeks.
On the other side and despite his constant efforts to stay clean, the rocker is pretty optimistic. Outside the courthouse, he told the press that the test results still came back positive for drugs but then added, quote, 'maybe next time 'round'. The next hearing that will assess his progress has been scheduled for September.
