Dubbed at one point the most terrible couple in showbiz, for the brief time they were friends, Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse shared a common ground in music and, unfortunately, drugs. Still, her death left him devastated.

The rocker is featured in the latest issue of NME in which he opens up for the first time on what it was like to hear that Amy had died.

News came, he says, at the worst moment of his life. He had hit rock bottom and the shock was so great it sent him reeling.

On the bright side, Pete admits for the magazine, the shock also provided him with lots of inspiration, so that he'll be making his comeback with Amy-inspired music.

“When Amy died I was sat in a room, a matchbox room in Camden Town not able to leave, basically wallowing in my own filth. Literally knee-deep in [expletive]. Literally not able to move,” Doherty recalls.

“I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t see anyone, I couldn’t pick up the guitar, and when I did pick up the guitar it was woeful ballads about how Amy wouldn’t be coming round tonight. It wasn’t a very inspiring time,” the rocker further says.

He wasn't allowed at Amy's funeral and he believes that her family held him partially responsible for the way her life spiraled out of control in her final years.

If they did or do, they're probably right, because Pete and Amy did do drugs together. Below is a video of the paparazzi frenzy they'd generate whenever they stepped out together, usually very much under the influence.

“I think she would have wanted me at the funeral. It’s a personal feeling of grief I’ve never had a chance to see through. I’m made to feel like I’m not her friend, which I was,” Pete explains.

In the same interview, he also addresses that controversial episode in 2006, when he ran from the crime scene, when one of his friends fell to his death from a balcony.

Doherty explains that, at the time, he was on bail and he had “his pockets full of drugs,” which is why he chose to act in such a “dodgy” manner and run away.
